RAPAPORT… Israeli diamantaires will now will pay less tax on polished diamond after the country’s parliament (Knesset) formally approved a levy reduction on Monday.

The tax on polished imports has been cut from 2 pro-mille (0.2 percent) to 1.35 pro-mille (0.135 percent) and is being introduced retroactively from the beginning of 2007. Eli Avidar, managing director of the Israel Diamond Institute, said IDI has already been reimbursing companies the retroactive difference from 2007. IDI did not say how much the total reimbursement was.

The 1.35 pro mille levy is used by the IDI to benefit the local industry through marketing initiatives, branding, investment in research and development, and in training programs that enhance professionalism.
